A Statement from The Institute of Cancer Research and The Royal Marsden NHS Trust in Response to the Government's NHS Cancer Plan

The Institute of Cancer Research and The Royal Marsden Hospital welcome the announcement today of a National Cancer Plan and the renewed focus on cancer research, prevention, screening and treatment.

Ms Cally Palmer, Chief Executive of The Royal Marsden Hospital said: "We also welcome the additional investment in research and treatment and would wish to contribute wherever we can to initiatives to improve outcomes for cancer patients throughout the country."

Dr Peter Rigby, Chief Executive of The Institute of Cancer Research said: "I particularly welcome plans to establish a new National Cancer Research Institute and look forward to playing my role in setting national research priorities and improving the co-ordination of research into cancer genetics."

Scientists at The Institute of Cancer Research have cloned more cancer-related genes than any other research organisation in the world, and through the recently initiated Cancer Genome Project, continue to be world-leaders in the field of cancer genetics.
